The Love Center's History
The Lighthouse Love
Center was conceived out of the desire of the congregation
of the Lighthouse
Christian Fellowship to reach out to the community in Holmes
County with the
love of Jesus Christ. Opening in 1986, the Center began by
operating out of
the back of the church building and over the years has served from
several different
locations.
Our Purpose
Our desire is to
serve those families who are experiencing difficulty in meeting
the basic
nutritional needs of their household, whatever the circumstances
might
be. Fresh and
frozen food, as well as dry and canned goods, are distributed
according to the
number of people living in the household. Although the Federal
Poverty Guidelines
are one way we assess need, assistance is not based on income
alone. Any family
with a genuine need will be served.
Our Operation
The Love Center is
staffed with faithful volunteers from area churches. Currently
directed by Mark
and Dorothy Rohrer, the Love Center serves an average of over
500 people per
month.
For our records,
each family is asked to fill out an application for assistance
when
they come in. They
may visit the Love Center two times a month without question.
If they should need
more assistance in the same month, they will be asked to
counsel with the
director or designated staff member to determine how we may
better help them or
see if they could utilize other community resources.
With our new
“Choice” system, clients are permitted to choose the groceries
that
they know their
family will like. Volunteers take weekly trips to the Akron Food
Bank where
financial donations are used to purchase bulk quantities of food
staples
as well as to
receive special “treats” to distribute along with the supply of
food
provided.
Our Goal
We endeavor to
serve the community with love as we are called to by our Lord
and Savior Jesus
Christ.
All clients are
treated with dignity and respect. It is our belief that these are
just
common people with
common problems who, due to personal crises or
uncontrollable
circumstances, need a “hand-up” to get back on their feet. The
Love Center cannot
solve their problems but we can help them get through it.
Our hope is that
they will feel the love of Christ in us so that they can see the
freedom and peace
that comes from knowing God and experiencing His great love.
Donations
The Love Center
receives food donations, financial contributions and volunteer
workers from local
churches, private individuals, businesses, and organizations.
In addition
to the donated food distributed through the Love Center, some
additional
supplies are
purchased from the Akron Food Bank with money donated for that
purpose. This
ensures that any family visiting our facility will receive a well
balanced
supply of food.
The Love Center
gladly accepts donations of Christian reading and audio
materials.
These are offered
to the clients at no cost.
Donations to the
Love Center may be dropped off during our normal operating
hours, which are
Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:00p.m. to 4:30p.m.,
or by appointment.
We are grateful for
the community’s support of the Love Center as we endeavor
to reach out to our
friends and neighbors with the love of Christ.
